A Time for Progress

Time For ChangeA few years ago in early January, one of my relatives who was in her 60s told me that her New Year’s resolution was to lose thirty pounds.  In February, I asked her how her diet was going, and she told me that she had quit the diet.  When I asked why, she said, “The first week I lost three pounds.  The second week I didn’t lose any weight.  The third week I lost only a pound.  The fourth week I didn’t lose anything.  After that, I gave up.”

The True Spirit of Christmas

NativityDuring my sophomore year in high school, I had a friend with whom I would regularly compete to see who could lift the most weights. (For the purpose of this article, I’m going to call him “Frank.”) Anytime one of us challenged the other, we would meet in the locker room to see who could bench press the most weight. Frank had an advantage over me because he was a year older, two inches taller, and weighed about thirty pounds more than I did.

Envy – The Viral Passion

Hell came into existence because of the pride and envy of Lucifer and his followers. Lucifer envied God’s perfection and authority over him. He also envied the happiness of our first parents and did everything in his power to alienate them from God.

Evil Visits A Small Community

If you pay any attention to the news, you know that on Friday morning, December 14, a 20-year-old man shot and killed his mother in her home in Newtown, Connecticut, and then drove her car to a local elementary school and murdered six adults and twenty children.  He then turned his gun on himself and committed suicide.

A Culture of Football, Guns, & Sin

If you’re a sports fan or if you pay attention to national events, you know about the National Football League (NFL) Kansas City Chiefs’ linebacker who shot and killed his girlfriend last week and then committed suicide.  The football player was Jovan Belcher.  What caught my attention was the immediate rush to judgment by journalists and commentators in the sports and news media, most of whom wanted to place the blame on. the “gun culture” and the “violent game of football.”

Lust – The All-Consuming Passion

After pride, lust is the vice that the devil prefers to use to lure people away from God.  Lust blinds the mind of a person, and since it is the mind that enlightens the will, once blinded, it no longer has the ability to lead the will away from the irrational urges of the body.  Lust is an undiscerning passion that acts on fantasies, thoughts, and desires.  Lust always leads to irrational, reckless, ruinous, and self-destructive behavior.

Born To Win

I have a large library of self-improvement and personal development books, cassette tapes, CDs, DVDs, and digital audio and video computer files that I constantly refer to for inspiration, motivation, and guidance.  Among those items are cassette tapes and CDs that were produced by Zig Ziglar, one of the top motivational speakers in America.
