Eve responded, “Of the fruit of the trees that are in paradise we do eat: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of paradise, God hath commanded us that we should not eat; and that we should not touch it, lest perhaps we die.” Genesis 3:2-3. Every time a sin is committed, something within us dies. The result of sin is always death. This has been true from the beginning of time.
Last Tuesday evening (October 16) while I was participating in a holy hour in a perpetual adoration chapel in Cleveland, Ohio, I learned that my second-biggest Adoration Letter fan was scheduled to have her leg amputated. Georgette and I had arrived in Ohio on Monday evening for two days of meetings with a group of business owners who get together three times a year to share ideas and strategies for growing their businesses.
A couple of weeks ago I published an article in which I discussed organ donation and two incidents involving individuals who found themselves in a position where they had to make decisions concerning ending the lives of family members who had been declared brain-dead. Out of everything created in the world by God – the universe, the stars, the sun, the earth, the light, the darkness, the water, the plants, the creatures of sea and land – His greatest creation was man. Why? Because He breathed His own spirit into the soul of man. Man is the only worldly creature that is blessed with an immortal soul. Like God, man has the ability to think and to love.
One Friday afternoon during my first year in law school (1979), while I was sitting in the law library, a girl who was in one of my classes walked over to me and asked, “What is that book you’re reading?” She had seen the title of the book, The Woman Shall Conquer, and was wondering what it was about.
One interesting theory that has been written about by some theologians is that God’s original plan did not include the creation of humans. Instead, His original intention was to populate heaven with angels. Unfortunately, because of the pride and rebellion of Lucifer and his followers, a conflict arose and Lucifer and his followers were subsequently cast into hell. According to the theory, it was at that time that God decided to create the human race, with the intention of populating heaven with the exact number of humans needed to replace the fallen angels. Although it’s an interesting theory, we have no way of knowing whether it’s true.
About six years ago on a Thursday morning around 10 o’clock, I got a phone call from Georgette. At the time, I was at my office. She told me that a man we both knew was on life support at one of the local hospitals. He was in his 60s and had gone in for surgery earlier that morning. Something went wrong during the surgery, and he had stopped breathing. The surgical team was able to bring him back to life, but his wife and children were told that he was “brain dead.” The only thing keeping him alive was a ventilator (a breathing machine).
Do you remember the definition of God from your childhood religion class? The definition was simple and concise: an infinitely perfect Supreme Being who created all things and keeps them in existence. Yes, he not only created us, but continually keeps us in existence.
Although I like the Internet and most of its features and benefits, when it comes to sending and receiving communications of any substance, I hate email. I long for the good old days (20 years ago) when people wrote real letters, folded them up, placed them in envelopes addressed to the intended recipients, and mailed them.
