A Simple Reminder

Prayer Before MealsLast week, my daughter, Laura, shared a recent experience in a family email.  After I read the email, I asked Laura if I could publish what she said in my Adoration Letter.  She said yes.  Laura is 26 years old and was recently involved in a play at a local community theater.  I changed the name of her friend to protect her friend’s privacy.  Here’s the email:

Fake Money vs. Real Money

The Queen of Titles

The dictionary defines the word “title” as “an appellation of dignity, honor, distinction, or preeminence attached to a person or family by virtue of rank, office, precedent, privilege, attainment, or lands.”  It is said that the Blessed Virgin Mary has more than 1,000 titles, a handful of which are: Mother of God, Queen of Heaven, Seat of Wisdom, Mirror of Justice, Vessel of Honor, Cause of Our Joy, Gate of Heaven, Morning Star, and Comforter of the Afflicted.

Bitcoins, Money, and Digital Savings Accounts

BitcoinYou may have heard of bitcoins, a digital currency that is being used by various individuals to purchase items on the Internet.  There are a lot of people who think that the adoption and use of bitcoins is a solution to some of the problems caused by the runaway creation of money by various governments throughout the world.  I have my doubts about the viability of this so-called new form of money.  Here’s how Wikipedia describes Bitcoin:

Catching FireLast week I saw the movie, Catching Fire, with Georgette and two of our daughters, Mary and Teresa.  Catching Fire is based on the second book of The Hunger Games trilogy, and picks up where the original movie, The Hunger Games, left off.  Following the events of the first movie, the main character, Katniss Everdeen, returns home to her mother and sister.

A Duck Hunter Wins One for the Christians

Phil RobertsonOn Christmas morning, my wife sent a text message to me and our children with a link to a YouTube video.  The beginning of the video showed images from the first Christmas.  The audio that played in the background was from the segment of “A Charlie Brown Christmas” where Linus recited the famous passage from the Gospel of Luke: “And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.  And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them….”

A Super Ball and the Mother of God

Super BallDo you know when the Super Ball was invented?  It was invented when I was 7 years old (1964), by chemist Norman Stingley.  I first learned about it from seeing commercials on television, which showed the new magical ball soaring into the sky whenever someone threw it against the pavement.  I later got to see it in action firsthand after several of my cousins convinced their mothers to buy them their own Super Balls.

The Language of Money

Accumulate WealthDuring my first year of practicing law (1983), I got a call from a young man who had received a speeding ticket.  He was employed by Domino’s Pizza as a deliveryman, and he wanted me to help him keep the ticket off his driving record.  For purposes of discussion, I’m going to call him Jim.
