Sacrificing Comfort for Growth

Comfort ZoneMy mom was 19 years old when she married my dad.  She was 20 when she had the first of her 17 children.  Georgette and I were both 23 when we were married.  We had the first of our seven children the following year.

The Real Secret to Weight Loss and Holiness

Weight LossOne of my older brothers, Mike, is a medical doctor who lives in California with his wife and family.  I see Mike about once a year, usually at a family function.  Mike was recently in Peoria with his wife and one of their children for a family wedding.  Mike is 61 years old and he looks like a movie star.  He’s tall, slim, and good-looking.  If you asked me who he looks like, I would say that he looks like a cross between the modern-day actor George Clooney and the legendary actor Omar Sharif.

Controlling your Mind, Emotions, and Body

Mind Body SoulThe spring semester of my junior year in college (1978) was the best semester I ever had as a college student.  It was also the most challenging.  I had a full load of 300-level classes in accounting and business and competition among the students was very tough.

Fearless

Fear Into ActionDuring the summer of 1989, most evenings I came home from work, ate supper with my family, and then sat in a lawn chair in the front yard of our home to read the newspaper.  We lived in a quiet, residential neighborhood in Peoria where there wasn’t much traffic.

The Appetite of Fear

Fear Stops LifeLast week I told you about the first auto accident injury case that I tried in front of a jury.  I won the case despite being up against a trial attorney who had more than 30 years of experience, compared to my two years of experience.  I told you about how I was like a fearless teenager who takes risks he shouldn’t take and jumps into situations he shouldn’t be involved in.  Because of my youthfulness and lack of experience, I didn’t have any fear of going up against the older more experienced attorney.

Pruning

PruningA couple of times a week, my wife (Georgette) sends an email to me and our children with an update on what’s been going on in her life and the lives of our children.  Three of our seven children live out of town — one in California, one in Colorado, and one in Chicago.

A Dress Code For The Courtroom

Dress CodeOne day about 20 years ago, I needed to have a court order signed by one of the judges at the Peoria County Courthouse.  I walked over to the courthouse from my downtown office.  When I entered the courtroom, the only people present were the judge and a local area attorney.  As soon as I walked up to the judge to ask him to sign the order, he said, “Where’s your jacket?”
