A Simple Reminder

Last week, my daughter, Laura, shared a recent experience in a family email. After I read the email, I asked Laura if I could publish what she said in my Adoration Letter. She said yes. Laura is 26 years old and was recently involved in a play at a local community theater. I changed the name of her friend to protect her friend’s privacy. Here’s the email:

Catching Fire in the New Year

Last week I saw the movie, Catching Fire, with Georgette and two of our daughters, Mary and Teresa. Catching Fire is based on the second book of The Hunger Games trilogy, and picks up where the original movie, The Hunger Games, left off. Following the events of the first movie, the main character, Katniss Everdeen, returns home to her mother and sister.

A Duck Hunter Wins One for the Christians

On Christmas morning, my wife sent a text message to me and our children with a link to a YouTube video. The beginning of the video showed images from the first Christmas. The audio that played in the background was from the segment of “A Charlie Brown Christmas” where Linus recited the famous passage from the Gospel of Luke: “And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them….”

During the summer of 1989, most evenings I came home from work, ate supper with my family, and then sat in a lawn chair in the front yard of our home to read the newspaper. We lived in a quiet, residential neighborhood in Peoria where there wasn’t much traffic.

The Appetite of Fear

Last week I told you about the first auto accident injury case that I tried in front of a jury. I won the case despite being up against a trial attorney who had more than 30 years of experience, compared to my two years of experience. I told you about how I was like a fearless teenager who takes risks he shouldn’t take and jumps into situations he shouldn’t be involved in. Because of my youthfulness and lack of experience, I didn’t have any fear of going up against the older more experienced attorney.

Last week, I reread two documents: the U.S. Constitution, which was written more than 200 years ago, and The Communist Manifesto, which was written more than 150 years ago. James Madison and the other authors of the Constitution were primarily concerned with guaranteeing the freedom and liberty of all Americans by placing severe limitations on the power of the federal government. Karl Marx, the author of The Communist Manifesto, mapped out what would become a blueprint for dictators whose primary aim was to achieve power by exercising complete control over the lives of their citizens.

A Lesson from Iron Man 3

Last weekend, I saw Iron Man 3 with Georgette and two of our daughters. Iron Man 3 is the seventh installment of the Marvel Comic Universe of movies that includes Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, and The Avengers. The lead character in the Iron Man series is Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.), a self-described genius, billionaire, playboy, and philanthropist.
