An Unusual Reason to be Grateful

GratefulDuring the spring semester of my senior year of high school, I had a communications class with a teacher who was in her mid-50s.  One of my classmates was a good friend of mine whose father was a doctor.  On the last day of class, the teacher asked each of the students what their goals were for the future.

Relationships, Familiarity, and Contempt

ContemptAbout 10 years ago, an adorer called our home to let us know that he and his wife were not going to be able to cover their holy hour.  (For the purpose of this article, I’m going to call him Frank.)  At the time of the call, Frank and his wife were in their late 70s.  Since no one was home to answer the telephone, Frank left a message on our answering machine.

The Age of Mercy

Pope - ConfessionYou may have seen the media frenzy surrounding Pope Francis’s recent answer to a reporter’s question about homosexuality, when the pope said, “Who am I to judge?”  While the worldwide media focused on this one particular response, they ignored the overall theme of the pope’s answers to questions that were thrown at him by reporters for over an hour.

A Lesson In Humility

Humility - C S LewisLast week I suffered through a humiliating experience that completely blindsided me.  In hindsight, I probably should have seen it coming, but I didn’t.  I ordinarily don’t have any problems sleeping, but this particular experience left me so shell-shocked that I had trouble sleeping for several nights after it occurred.  All I could do was lie in bed, rosary beads in hand, and alternate between praying the mysteries of the Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet.

Revealing Your Worst Sin To The Public

What was it that Jesus wrote on the ground when the gang of scribes and Pharisees brought the woman to Him and told Him that because she had been caught in the act of adultery, the law of Moses commanded that she be stoned to death?  How long was He writing before the eldest man in the group walked away?  Did He intentionally knock out the eldest man first because he was the leader of the group?  Did He write new information after each man left?  Those are some of the questions that came to mind when I listened to the Gospel reading last Sunday (the fifth Sunday of Lent).  The relevant part of the Gospel is as follows:

The Brother of the Prodigal Son

Last Sunday (the fourth Sunday of Lent) the Gospel reading for the Mass (Luke 15:1-3, 11-32) described how the prodigal son asked and received half of his father’s inheritance, moved to a distant region, then proceeded to squander the money he received on alcohol and women.

Anger – The Father of all Sins

If pride is the mother of all sins, anger is the father.  While all sins are born from pride, those same sins are often supported by anger.  Pride nurtures sin, and anger defends it.

The Mother of all Sins

Of the seven root passions or sins – pride, lust, anger, avarice, envy, gluttony, and sloth – the most deadly is pride.  It was an appeal to pride that persuaded Eve to defy her Creator:  “…you shall be as Gods, knowing good and evil.”  (Genesis 3:6)

The Divine Apology

I grew up in the country in a family neighborhood that included seven families.  My grandparents lived next door to my parents, and all of the other families in the neighborhood were made up of my aunts, uncles, and cousins.  One of the uncles was my dad’s brother, Bill Williams.  His house was located next to a wooded area where he would sometimes hunt for rabbits and quail.  Uncle Bill loved hunting so much, he set up a little “gun shop” in his basement where he could re-fill his own shotgun shells.
