A Bug Watch and a Guardian Angel

Bug Watch PackageOn Mother’s Day, my oldest daughter Anna invited our entire family over to her house for dinner. After dinner, we celebrated the birthday of her 6-year-old son, David. Whenever I’m invited to one of my grandchildren’s birthday parties, I go out of my way to find an inexpensive but unique gift that they will remember and enjoy using. I always tease them ahead of time about the gift I have for them.

Changing Beliefs About Hair Color

Miss ClairolThere was an article in Adweek magazine a few years ago that discussed how women weren’t open to using hair-color products when they were first introduced in the 1950s. In 1956, Clairol introduced “Miss Clairol,” a “hair color bath” for women that provided a one-step product for natural-looking results.

A Perfect Family

GrandparentsFive years ago, Georgette and I attended a wedding at a local Christian church. The bride was the oldest daughter of a client of mine. My client and her husband have four adult children, all of whom are devout Christians.

A Ritual Worth Considering

ritual-de-havanaLast week, one of my clients asked me if I would say some prayers for her and her family. For the purpose of this article, I’m going to call her “Julie.” After asking for prayers, Julie said that she’s been having problems at home with her teenage daughters.

A Letter to a Coach and Mentor

No Pain No GainLast November, I received a letter from the wife (“Carla”) of one of my longtime business coaches and mentors. In the letter, Carla said her husband (“Dan”) was going to be celebrating his 60th birthday in December. She said that, as a gift, she wanted to give him letters from his friends and colleagues. She asked if I would be willing to write a letter to her husband that told him how I had benefited from my relationship with him.

Turning Off The Idiot Box

Idiot Box -Turn It OffWhen I was growing up, the one order we heard most from my mom was, “Turn off the TV and go outside!” If we didn’t immediately do what she said, she would rush over to the television, turn it off, and again order us to go outside.

A Special Christmas Gift

Christmas PresentEarlier this month, I had a conversation with a judge who recently retired after serving as a state court judge for more than 20 years. For the purpose of this article, I’m going to call him “John.” John is in his early 60s, and during our conversation he asked me how many grandchildren I have. I told him that after adding three new grandsons last month, my wife and I have 10 grandchildren.

A Catholic Town Jester

JesterRecently my daughter Maria purchased a write-it-yourself children’s book for her four-year-old daughter, Grace.  The book came with some stickers of characters you would see in an animated movie about a castle and a royal family.  The characters included a king, queen, princess, wizard, town jester, and prince in shining armor.

A Stubborn Relative

StubbornAbout 20 years ago, when one of my relatives was going through some tough times, I tried to get him to commit to praying a rosary every day.  (For the purpose of this article, I’m going to call him “Jim.”)  Over a period of six months, Jim and I met on three separate occasions.
