The True Spirit of Christmas

During my sophomore year in high school, I had a friend with whom I would regularly compete to see who could lift the most weights. (For the purpose of this article, I’m going to call him “Frank.”) Anytime one of us challenged the other, we would meet in the locker room to see who could bench press the most weight. Frank had an advantage over me because he was a year older, two inches taller, and weighed about thirty pounds more than I did.

Last month, there was an event that caused me to stop what I was doing and think back to 1989. That was the year I purchased The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, a book written by Stephen Covey. The event that caused me to stop and think about Covey’s book was a report on the news that he had passed away. Covey died on July 16, 2012, at the age of 79. At the time of his death, he was a professor at the John Huntsman School of Business at Utah State University.

The time for sorrow and suffering is over. That’s what you and I will hear when our souls enter into heaven. Can you hear the words being spoken as you enter into the Kingdom? “The time for sorrow and suffering is over.” Can you smell the heavenly scent? Can you feel the soft cushion of the plush green heavenly grass under your bare feet? Can you taste the cool clean sparkling water from the nearby heavenly stream? Can you see your Savior in His full splendor and glory sitting on His throne?

The Truth About Panic

When the recent earthquake and tsunami hit Japan, people in various parts of the world panicked. A week after the earthquake, a Los Angeles Times article reported that there were “long lines and mob scenes at stores across China after rumors spread of a radioactive cloud from Japan’s quake-damaged nuclear plant.” Can you guess what the mobs of people were trying to buy? Iodized salt. They were under the false impression that they would be protected from radiation if they consumed extra iodized salt.

Meltdown

Do you know how many nuclear power plants we have in Illinois? Until a few days ago, I had never given it any thought. With the recent news about the damaged nuclear reactors in Japan (and the threat of radiation poisoning), I decided to investigate. In case you don’t know, we have 6 nuclear power generation plants in Illinois, located in the following cities and counties: Braidwood (Will County), Byron (Ogle County), Clinton (De Witt County), Morris (Grundy County), Marseilles (La Salle County), and Cordova (Rock Island County). The closest nuclear plant to Peoria is in Clinton, Illinois, which is approximately 62 miles from Downtown, Peoria.
