Beyond Your 15 Minutes of Fame

15 MInutes of FameFive years ago, in an Adoration Letter article titled “A Prayer for a Beating Heart,” I asked for prayers for my wife, Georgette. In the article, I wrote about a genetic condition that she had that caused the wall of one of the ventricles of her heart to become so thick that her heart was unable to supply her body with a sufficient amount of oxygenated blood. Her health was quickly deteriorating and the only way to correct the problem was through open-heart surgery, which was scheduled for June 16, 2010.

The Desire To Live Forever

Groundhog DayHave you ever seen the movie Groundhog Day? It was released in 1993, and has since become one of the top 10 classic American fantasy comedy movies. The main character in the movie, Phil Connors, is played by Bill Murray. Connors is an arrogant Pittsburgh-based television meteorologist who is assigned to cover the annual Groundhog Day ceremonies in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Connors is offended by the assignment because he considers it an insult to his intelligence to report on such a frivolous matter.

Flushing Poison Out of Your Heart, Mind and Soul

Forgiveness - PoisonDo you know what the Blessed Mother, the apostles, the disciples, and all the followers of Jesus had in common, other than believing that Jesus was the Son of God? They all forgave everyone who was involved in the torture and murder of their Savior. Think about how difficult that had to be. I know how hard it is for me to forgive certain people for what they have done to me, but I can’t imagine how difficult it would have been to forgive those murderers.

From Jonny Quest To Batman

Jonny QuestOf all the superhero movies that have been released by Marvel and DC comics, Batman is my least favorite, primarily because of the dark and diabolical nature of the villains. Despite my dislike of the Batman movies, I still watch them. In the last Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises, the villain, Bane, delivers a crippling blow to Batman’s back. He then escorts Batman to an underground prison. The only way out of the prison is through a tower-like tunnel that is carved out of rock.

A Reason To Smile

SmileAbout five years ago, I was attending a weekday Mass at a local church.  Halfway through the Mass, two women in their sixties snuck in the side door of the church and ran over to the nearest pew.  Both women were wearing gray sweatshirts.  The way they scurried over to the pew reminded me of the animated mice you would see in a Disney movie — because the women were short, pudgy, cute, and grinning from ear to ear.

How Well Do You Know God?

If you were to ask me to describe someone I’m familiar with, I would start by naming the person’s attributes.  An attribute is defined as “an inherent characteristic” or “a word ascribing a quality.”  For example, if you asked me to describe my dad (Carl Williams), I would respond by saying that he’s organized, practical, protective, by-the-book, private, efficient, productive, hardworking, trustworthy, skilled, confident, decisive, and strategic.  My description of how I remember my grandfather (Tom Williams) would include the following attributes: bold, vigorous, genuine, intense, self-reliant, admired, dominant, forceful, trustworthy, confident, decisive, and independent.

Does It Take Money to Make Money?

Takes Money To Make MoneyYou may have heard of Shark Tank, the television series that premiered on ABC in August, 2009.  The show features business owners who make presentations to five potential investors, who are referred to as “sharks.”  Each of the sharks is an experienced entrepreneur who became wealthy by inventing products or by successfully starting and growing one or more businesses.  Shark Tank is now in its fourth season, and is the most watched television program among 18 to 49-year-olds on Friday nights.

Sloth – Failure To Do God’s Work

Do you know the first words of Jesus Christ that were recorded in the Bible?  His mother asked Him why He had not told her where He had been for three days, and the twelve-year-old Son of God responded, “How is it that you sought Me?  Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?”  (Luke 2:49)
