An Apostle Speaks Out

As you know, last week Bishop Jenky issued a directive to all the priests in the Diocese of Peoria to read a letter at each of the weekend Masses.  I have some observations about the letter, but first, here’s what Bishop Jenky wrote:

The Mother of all Sins

Of the seven root passions or sins – pride, lust, anger, avarice, envy, gluttony, and sloth – the most deadly is pride.  It was an appeal to pride that persuaded Eve to defy her Creator:  “…you shall be as Gods, knowing good and evil.”  (Genesis 3:6)

Is There Opportunity In Humiliation?

Over the past year I’ve gotten to know a young man who works at a local restaurant.  (For the purposes of this discussion, I’m going to call him Rusty.)  I see Rusty at least once a week when I pick up something to eat at the restaurant.  Rusty is a devout Christian.  He’s 36 years old, married, and has three children.  He works hard, is honest, has a good attitude, and appears to get along well with everyone he comes into contact with.

Lent, Kites & Secrets

On a Sunday afternoon in March of 1968, when I was 11 years old, one of my aunts packed her 8 children (6 boys and 2 girls) into her station wagon and took them over to my Grandparents’ house to visit.  At that time, we lived in the country and my parents’ home was next-door to my grandparents’ home.

A Prayer of Thanksgiving for Nitwits?

I’m in a bad mood today (Monday, November 22).  I’m Irritable.  Angry.  Part of my problem is that I’m not feeling well (headache, exhausted, stomach cramps, cold symptoms).  On a normal day I have trouble practicing patience, but when I’m not feeling well I turn into a bear. On days like this, I’m better off staying away from other people, especially nitwits.

Bureaucrats, Entrepreneurs & Saints

One of the most interesting political races during the recent election cycle was the governor’s race in California.  On the Democrat side was Jerry Brown, the 72 year old former governor of California.  On the Republican side was a woman by the name of Meg Whitman.

The Critic & The EXTREME Parent

On a Friday night about eight years ago, I got myself into an argument with one of my college age children (“the college student”).  The argument centered around a certain movie that I thought was morally objectionable.  At one point, the college student blurted out: “Dad, most Catholics would not agree with you about this movie.  You’re too extreme when comes to things like this.  I can only think of two other people who would agree with you: grandmother (my mom) and Aunt Patty.”

A First & Last Prayer

MaryAndTheResurrectedJesusChristAs Catholics, we know from what we’ve been taught that it was necessary for our Lord to die on the cross in order to redeem us from our sins and to open the gates of Heaven.  Prior to His death, because of the sins of Adam and Eve, Heaven was “off limits” to everyone.
