A Simple Formula for Happiness

HappinessLast week, while I was meeting with a client, she started talking about a new crisis in her life that was causing her distress.  (For the purpose of this article, I’m going to call my client “Julie.”)  At any other time in her life, Julie would have easily been able to handle the type of crisis she was going through, but this time she was in severe distress.

A Reason To Smile

SmileAbout five years ago, I was attending a weekday Mass at a local church.  Halfway through the Mass, two women in their sixties snuck in the side door of the church and ran over to the nearest pew.  Both women were wearing gray sweatshirts.  The way they scurried over to the pew reminded me of the animated mice you would see in a Disney movie — because the women were short, pudgy, cute, and grinning from ear to ear.

The Loss of a Unique Football Coach

Bum PhillipsHave you ever heard of Bum Phillips?  He was the football coach who built the Houston Oilers into one of the top NFL teams in the late 1970s.  Phillips was best known for his larger-than-life, no-nonsense character.  He referred to himself as a “coach, cowboy, and Christian,” and customarily dressed in jeans, cowboy boots, a work shirt, and a white Stetson hat.

School Is Never Out

Cavett Robert (1907-1997), a lawyer and founder of the National Speakers Association, used to say, “School is never out for the professional.”  During the time he was on the national speaking circuit, Cavett sold courses that consisted of workbooks and cassette tapes for people to take home to listen to and study on their own.  He and other well-known speakers emphasized the importance of “spaced repetition,” a learning system that encouraged a person to listen to each cassette a minimum of seven times so the material that was covered would become imbedded in the subconscious mind of the listener.

A Mother Makes An Obscene Gesture Toward Me

MotherhoodLast month, I stopped at Schnucks in Peoria to purchase a couple of items.  After I left the store, I drove alongside the curb in front of the store toward Glen Avenue.  The weather was warm and there were a lot of people walking near the area where I was driving.  After stopping at one of the small stop signs between Schnucks and Bed Bath & Beyond, I proceeded forward.

Born To Win

I have a large library of self-improvement and personal development books, cassette tapes, CDs, DVDs, and digital audio and video computer files that I constantly refer to for inspiration, motivation, and guidance.  Among those items are cassette tapes and CDs that were produced by Zig Ziglar, one of the top motivational speakers in America.
