Stretching Your Way To New Capabilities

Rubber BandsLast month, a 22-year-old man scheduled an appointment with my office to discuss the possibility of filing a bankruptcy.  For the purpose of this article, I’m going to call him “Jim.”  When Jim and I met, he explained to me that he had been terminated from his job earlier in the year and was drowning in debt.  He told me that he currently lives with his girlfriend in the basement of her parents’ home.

Halloween, Ebola, and a Saint

Halloween - BooIt’s that time of year again.  Halloween is right around the corner and a lot of people are scared.  Our so-called leaders walk around as though they are zombies whose purpose is to destroy our nation.  Every decision they make is the exact opposite of what a reasonable, rational person would decide.  What’s even scarier is the sheep-like behavior of the masses who wander about, clueless as to what’s going on around them.

Relationships, Familiarity, and Contempt

ContemptAbout 10 years ago, an adorer called our home to let us know that he and his wife were not going to be able to cover their holy hour.  (For the purpose of this article, I’m going to call him Frank.)  At the time of the call, Frank and his wife were in their late 70s.  Since no one was home to answer the telephone, Frank left a message on our answering machine.

Pruning

PruningA couple of times a week, my wife (Georgette) sends an email to me and our children with an update on what’s been going on in her life and the lives of our children.  Three of our seven children live out of town — one in California, one in Colorado, and one in Chicago.

The Language of the Rosary

Blessed Virgin MaryI periodically encounter a devout Catholic who is struggling with emotional issues that are causing him or her to experience significant suffering.  After a short discussion about what’s troubling the person, I always ask the exact same question: Do you pray your rosary every day?  The answer is always ‘no.’  Always.
